Yes — do not attempt to install plastic hubcaps, wheel covers, or wheel skins when temperatures are at or below 40°F. Plastic becomes brittle near freezing and the potential to crack is far greater.

The most common cause is road conditions — potholes and heaved pavement. Hitting these at speed shocks the tire and wheel enough that the wheel flexes and throws covers off, and can even bend rims. Proper retention and correct fitment greatly reduce this.
